A Guide to Tikkurila's Outdoor Furniture Painting

There are very few better ways to spend a hot summer's day than inviting friends and family over for a nice BBQ in your garden. One thing that could throw a wrench in your plans would be if your garden furniture was looking a bit degraded and worn down.

It is easy to forget that our garden furniture is exposed to the elements year-round. Weathering and abrasions are common issues found with garden furniture.

Perhaps it's a little old, or maybe it's just not been treated properly for a few years, whatever the reason for its current condition just know that there are ways to bring it back to its former glory with Tikkurila's brilliant collection of outdoor paints.

In this guide, we will break down everything you need to make that furniture look great in time for summer.

Garden Furniture Oil

Tikkurila offers a few wood oils that can be used to treat your garden furniture while retaining its natural features. A popular option among those who prefer the natural appearance of wood.

While these products can be purchased colourless they are also offered tinted with a wide selection of translucent wood stain colours. Well over 100 options to choose from.

We have two oils in this range which include a water-based wood oil and a solvent-based option.

The Valtti Wood Oil is a water-based option. This oil offers excellent protection for your wood and prevents cracking. It has also been M1 certified for its low toxicity.

The other product has the name, however, is differentiated on the site with "solvent-based" in the title. This oil is better for hardwood furniture.

Paint for Outdoor Furniture

If you are not so concerned about seeing the grains of your furniture you may consider using paint. These products are a bit different from our indoor furniture paints.

Wood Garden Furniture Paint

Wood paint is a great way to bring a new colour to your garden furniture. With Tikkurila, there are thousands of colours to choose from. We have vibrant, bold hues that make it a focal point of your garden, to subtle and understated colours that can give off a contemporary vibe.

Our key wood paint for garden furniture is called Unica Akva. This is a water-based top coat that has been awarded M1 certification for its low VOCs.

You'll find Unica Akva to be a very durable paint that will withstand the elements with ease. It also dries in a semi-gloss finish ensuring unrivalled modern appeal.

You can also get this paint in a sample pot if you want to try out a few colours before committing.

If you have metal garden furniture you can also use Unica Akva to paint metal garden furniture. You will want to coat the metal with Rostex Super Metal Primer before applying your Unica Akva. This primer has anti-corrosion properties, ideal for metal that will face the elements.

There are other primers for wood, but we will get into that a bit later on.
