Panssari Akva

Quick drying semi-matt, water-borne high performance single pack coating for steel, cladding and roofing

Water-borne semi-matt acrylic paint for use on cladding, sheet metal and other factory finished surfaces. Panssari Akva offers superb weather resistance, colour stability, film flexibility and an extremely durable finish which protects against attack from chemical and biological erosion.

New or previously painted interior and exterior cladding, roof sheets, steel, UPVC, gutters drain pipes. Panssari Akva can be applied directly onto surfaces previously painted with alkyd or acrylic paints and factory coated steel sheets (PVC, PURAL, POLYESTER, PVDF, Plastisol).

Extreme durability from a water based system ideal for interior and exterior applications.

Resistant to ultraviolet radiation

Panssari Akva’s modified acrylic binding agents are highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation. This makes it retain its colour and gloss extremely well. The coat also repels dirt and is easy to keep clean.

Durable, flexible paint film

This waterborne acrylate paint forms a flexible film coating that conforms to the movement of the metal sheets. By using Rostex Super Akva primer, the application method becomes fully waterborne.

Versatile applications

Panssari Akva is suitable for zinc-coated sheet metal roofs as well as most industrially coated steel sheets (excluding PVDF). Panssari Akva can be used directly on surfaces previously painted with alkyd paint, without priming.

APPLICATION DETAILS
Application conditions
The surface to be painted must be dry and warmer than the surrounding air. During treatment and drying the temperature of the air, surface and product must be at least +5 º C and the relative humidity of the air below 80 %. The relative humidity of the air, temperature and wind speed have a strong impact in drying time.
The temperature of the surface may not exceed +40oC, otherwise the water will evaporate too quickly. This may cause e.g. porosity, bubbling and weakened adhesion. Especially when maintenance painting conditions should be avoided, under which the paint dries quickly (warm and windy weather). The application time of Panssari Akva can be extended slightly by thinning the paint with water by max. 10 %. Excessive thinning and painting under unfavorable conditions may cause sagging of the paint. Plan the work so that the paint surface has enough time to dry before dewfall. Do not paint if the risk of rain is imminent.
Preparation
Previously painted surfaces/industrially coated (coil-coated) surfaces:
Remove possible rust (to St2 degree) and remove loose coating/paint with a scraper and wire brush. Clean the surface with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent from dirt, grease, oil, wax etc. according to instructions using a brush. Rinse the surfaces carefully, preferably with a pressure washer. Prime bare metal areas with Rostex Super Akva or Rostex Super Metal Primer.

Unpainted zinc-coated, steel and aluminium surfaces:
Paint new zinc-coated sheet metal roof at the earliest the following year after the installation. Best adhesion is achieved to already faded, mechanically or chemically roughened zinc-coated surface.
Remove possible rust (to St2 degree) by scraping and wire-brushing. Remove possible white rust by brushing or sanding. Remove dirt, water soluble salts, grease and oil from the surface with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent and brush. Rinse carefully with water and allow to dry. Roughen the aluminium surfaces before painting. Prime the zinc-coated metal surfaces and roughened aluminium and steel surfaces with 1 coat of Rostex Super Akva or Rostex Super.
Industrially coated surfaces:
Find out the type, condition and adhesion of the original coating. Check the maintenance from the coating manufacturer and the need for a separate primer. For more detailed instructions see Tikkurila Roof Painting Guide and Tikkurila website.

Painting
Pre-treated surfaces (see Preparation) are painted with Panssari Akva 1-2 times. The recommended dry-film thickness is 50-80 µm. Pay attention in choosing the correct brush. Recommendation: Tikkurila roof paint brush T6. Roof tile profile surfaces are recommended to be painted by spray. The slipperiness of paint surface can be reduced by adding Non Slip Agent into the paint, 1/3 l of powder into 10 l of paint. When using the Non Slip Agent there has to be two paint layers in the paint system and Non Slip Agent is included in the second layer. Maintenance painting: Surface painted with Panssari Akva can be recoated with Panssari Akva.
Cleaning of tools
Clean tools with water or with Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool cleaner. Remove hardened paint with Tikkurila Tool Cleaner.
Maintenance instructions
After 1 month the surface can be cleaned with Huoltopesu Maintenance Cleaner (mixing ratio: 1 part of Huoltopesu to 10 parts of water). Clean soiled surfaces and stains with a stronger Huoltopesu solution (1:1). Rinse the surface carefully after maintenance and let it dry.

Instructions

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
