Reduces total costs

.Ultra Primer is available in topcoat colours which aids coverage and speed of finishing.

Retards seepage of wood extractives

The natural expansion and contraction of wood and its discolorations cannot always be avoided. Ultra Primer retards the appearance of bleeding through the paint film.

A rewarding outcome

Ultra Primer protects a house under construction from moisture, and if you are building in the winter, you can safely leave the topcoat to be applied in the spring.

APPLICATION DETAILS
Application conditions
The surface to be painted must be dry i.e the moisture content of the wood shall not exceed 20 %. During painting and drying, the temperature of the air must be at least +5 ºC, and the relative humidity of the air below 80 %.
Preparation
Untreated surfaces:
Remove all dirt, mould and loose material from untreated or industrially primed wood surface. Wash dirty and mouldy surfaces with Tikkurila Mould Removal solution according to instructions. Treat bare wood surfaces with Valtti Base or Valtti Akvabase priming oil at the earliest possible construction stage. Protect nail heads and other rusting metal parts with Rostex Super Metal Primer. Remove loose resin from knots.

Previously treated surfaces:
Scrape away loose paint, finish clean with a steel brush. Wash down dirty and mouldy surfaces with Tikkurila Mould Removal solution according to instructions. Treat bare wood surfaces with Valtti Base or Valtti Akvabase priming oil. Patch paint with Ultra Primer.

Painting
Stir the paint carefully before use and thin with water max. 10 %, if necessary. Apply with wide paint brush or high-pressure spray gun and brush. Treat end-grain carefully. Top coat is recommended to be applied as soon as possible after priming, however latest within 10 months from priming. Finish 1-2 times with Ultra or Pika-Teho house paint depening on the colour difference of the substrate and the condition of the surface to be treated. Discoloration of paint may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood. Using a primer reduces discoloration.
Cleaning of tools
Clean tools with water. Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner) is recommended to be used for cleaning hardened paint from tools.

Instructions

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
