Can be tinted

Valtti Puuöljy Akva (Wood Oil Akva) can be tinted to Tikkurila translucent shades. We recommend choosing a colour as close as possible to the colour of the substrate so as to even out any colour variation.

Multipurpose

Valtti Wood Oil Akva is suitable for both previously oil-treated and new terraces, jetties, stairs, and garden furniture. It is also suitable for all wooden surfaces from impregnated wood to hardwood.

A pleasure to brush on

As a waterborne oil, it is a pleasant to brush on and is well absorbed into the wood. The tools are easy to clean with soap and water (or Pensselipesu Tool Cleaner)

Application method
Brush or sponge.
Drying time at 23°C and 50% relative air humidity
Touch-dry after a few hours under normal conditions. The porosity of the substrate and the amount of oil used affect the drying time. The second coat can be applied as soon as the oil is absorbed into wood or the surface is dry, normally approx. after few hours.
Weather resistance
We recommend to use a tinted product, because it has better resistance against weathering than a colourless product.
Maintenance treatment to be done when necessary. Surfaces exposed to continuous weathering may need to be treated annually.

Density
1.0 kg/l, ISO 2811.
Storage
Keep from freezing. Badly closed or short cans and/or tinted products do not withstand long storage. Tinted products should be used during the same painting season.

APPLICATION DETAILS
Application conditions
The surface to be treated must be dry and the moisture content of the wood must be below 20 %, because wet wood does not absorb oil and oil dries slowly. As impregnated wood is often damp, we recommend it to be treated after about 6 months from the installation.

During treatment and drying the temperature of the air must be at least +5ºC, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.
Preparation
Untreated surface:
Remove dirt, dust and loose material from the wood surface. Wash down moldy wood surface with Homeenpoisto (Mould Removal) or Tehopesu (Power Cleaner) according to instructions.
Previously with wood oil treated surface:
Remove loose material with scraper and/or wire brush. Clean the surface and wash down with Homeenpoisto (Mould Removal) or with Tehopesu (Power Cleaner) according to instructions, if needed. If a clear film remains on the surface, remove it before treatment.
Treatment
Stir Valtti Wood Oil Akva thoroughly before use and frequently during application. Spread one coat tightly with a brush or a sponge so that the oil is absorbed evenly into the wood. Normally one coat is enough, but a porous wood might need two coats. Spread evenly the entire length of the board in continuous strokes to avoid overlapping. Apply one coat on garden furniture. Porous wood might need two coats. When treating jetties take care that the oil does not end up in the water.
The second coat can be applied as soon as the oil is absorbed and the surface is dry, after few hours, depending on the weather conditions. Oil treatment makes the wood look darker. Carry out maintenance when necessary. Surfaces continuously exposed to the weather may need to be treated annually.
Cleaning of tools
Wash the tools with soap and water or Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner).
Maintenance instructions
Handle the new surface with care for approx. 1 week so that the product achieves its final hardness and durability. The surface can be cleansed lightly with a soft brush or mop after approx. 2 days from the treatment, if necessary.

Dirty surface can be washed with Huoltopesu (1 part of Huoltopesu into 10 parts of water). Clean stains and very dirty surfaces with a stronger solution of Huoltopesu (1:1). After washing rinse with water and let dry.

Valtti wood finishes and wood oils colour card

Wooden surfaces are exposed to unrelenting weathering from sunshine and humidity. Semi-transparent wood finishes protect wood surfaces against the weather, retarding the adverse effects of moisture and UV-light, without covering up the beautiful wood grain.

Instructions

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
