The majority of new bridges are now constructed using modular prefabricated components that are painted in a controlled workshop environment. This eliminates the need for on-site painting and allows for the use of high-tech paint systems that would be impossible or prohibitively expensive to apply on-site.
On most construction sites, only transportation damage is repaired and site-welded areas are coated. The topcoat may also be removed on-site, depending on the paint system.
For new bridge construction, we have a number of tried-and-true paint systems. Paint systems with zinc-rich primers, such as Temazinc, offer the most long-lasting corrosion protection.
