A method often used in kitchens to give them an expensive finish, painting wall surfaces and cabinets the same shade has the ability to create a cohesive and polished look. This neat little trick can even help make the smallest of spaces feel open and airy by giving the illusion of bulky furniture like consoles, bookcases or a bedside cabinet as unobtrusive built-ins. Just like magic, they become part of the space itself, rather than something that competes with it.
We took an unloved bedroom that lacked personality and transformed it into a defined sleeping space that adds an abundance of cosiness and drama.

For this project, we chose the clay-grey tones of the V487 Cloister shade and complimented the cool tones by pairing the paint colour with intense shades of black and slate grey. When paired with a Tikkurila interior paint, consider the direction of natural light, the size of the room and how the contents will affect your desired shade. The easiest way to understand your shade is to take a tester and try it out at different times of the day to see how the results are affected by natural and artificial light.
The sumptuous matt finish of Optiva Matt 5 was used for the interior wall paint, while the bedside cabinets and decorative moulding were enriched by our glossy Helmi 80 furniture paint to give the V487 Cloister colour depth.
Balance this intense colour palette by seeking out tactile touches such as laundered linen fabrics and macrame wall art, and curate smaller highlights like natural wooden textures and delicate gold objects to add character to the interior space. Your new sanctuary will now feel at home in a luxurious boutique hotel.
Putting the idea into practice
1. FIRST STEPS
Begin by wiping the surface of the wall clean. If the surface is in need of a deeper clean, use Tikkurila Maalipesu cleaning agent to remove any unwanted dirt and leave to dry.
2. PROTECT
Lay down dust sheets to protect the floorspace and cover mouldings and sockets with masking tape. If the wall surface needs to be levelled or if the previous paint is a darker colour, apply a coat of Optiva Primer. Choose Optiva Primer in a shade close to your new topcoat.
3. PAINTING
Stir the Optiva Matt 5 interior paint and apply two coats using a paint roller with an extension pole. Optiva Matt 5 can be recoated within a minimum of 4 hours of painting or may take longer depending on a low temperature or in conditions of increased humidity.
Painting the bedside cabinet and decorative moulding
1. CLEAN AND SAND
Begin by cleaning the surface of the furniture using Tikkurila Maalipesu cleaning agent - ensure to read instructions thoroughly before use. After drying time, sand the previous paint surface until matt and remove the sanding dust with a dust brush or a dust-binding cloth.
2. PRETREATMENT
Apply a single coat of Helmi Pohjamaali Primer to the bedside cabinet using a furniture paint roller or a paintbrush. Leave to dry for 5 hours before painting a topcoat.
