Begin by wiping the surface of the railings clean with the Tikkurila Homeenpoisto cleaning agent, removing any dirt or loose material from untreated surfaces and leave it to dry.
An outdated colour or a tired finish; when it becomes evident that your patio has seen better days, updating porch railings is an easy solution to refresh the look of your home.
There is no doubt that painting is an easy and cost-effective way to provide an instant refresh to our home décor. Whether it’s updating the colour of a front door or adding a touch of greenery, these easy-to-implement design elements can give our homes a new lease of life. One of those elements that should be at the top of your “consider updating list” is the entrance to your home and the surrounding patio or balcony railings. After all, this is a specific area that guests see first and where you will greet them, so you want to ensure these outdoor spaces of your home make a great first impression. This project shows you a quick and easy solution to refreshing entrance columns and wooden railings.
For a harmonious finish, the railings and entrance pillars were tinted with the soft off-white tones of D118 from the Tikkurila Puutalo colour card. This refreshed look was achieved with the semi-matt Valtti Opaque paint. Valtti Opaque is a versatile product for new and previously painted timber, developed for wooden façades to withstand extreme conditions. The surface is flexible and adjusts to the surface and seasons, forming a water-resistant paint finish that allows water vapour to permeate the wood.
Painting the entrance poles’ concrete blocks was made possible with the easy-to-use and tintable Yki Sokkelimaali, an exterior paint that protects the building’s foundation. Yki Sokkelimaali can be tinted to an extensive range of shades from our colour cards; Tikkurila’s Wooden Facades, Masonry Facades, and Facades, while attractive options can also be found in Tikkurila’s Kaunis Talo colour chips.
Putting the idea into practice
How to repaint the wooden balcony railings...
1. FIRST STEPS
Begin by wiping the surface of the railings clean with the Tikkurila Homeenpoisto cleaning agent, removing any dirt or loose material from untreated surfaces and leave it to dry.
2. REMOVING LOOSE PAINT
For previously painted surfaces, remove loose paint and greyed wood with sandpaper.
3. PAINTING THE RAILINGS
Stir the semi-matt film Valtti Opaque, pre-mixed with the shade D118 or your chosen colour, well before use. Usually, Valtti Opaque is used unthinned, but if necessary, thin with water. Apply 2 coats with a brush or spray on new surfaces or apply 2-3 coats to light coloured impregnated wood. Apply liberally on end-grain.
How to paint the entrance poles...
1. FIRST STEPS
Begin by wiping the unpainted surface of the exterior walls clean. If the surface requires a more in-depth clean due to mould or moss, use the Tikkurila Homeenpoisto cleaning agent to remove unwanted dirt and leave it to dry. Uneven concrete surfaces and block surfaces should be levelled before painting. Remove paint flaking or poorly adhered paint coats with sandpaper.
2. PAINTING THE ENTRANCE POLES
Before you begin painting, it is recommended to prime the substrate with Finngard Uni Primer for reducing the efflorescence caused by salts. Stir the Yki Sokkelimaali socle paint, pre-mixed with your chosen colour, well before use. If needed, the paint can be thinned for priming up to 20% with water but for finishing, use unthinned paint. If the new exterior colour differs from the old colour or the surface is very worn, apply two coats for the best results.
