Begin by wiping the unpainted surface of the exterior walls clean, removing any dirt or loose material from untreated surfaces. If the surface requires a more in-depth clean due to mould or moss, use the Tikkurila Homeenpoisto cleaning agent and leave it to dry.
For an easy and cost-effective method, switching up the colour scheme or simply opting for a paint refresh can revitalise our home décor. But when it comes to the outdoors, we often overlook smaller details to enhance the finished look. Windowsills and trims may be the least of your worries, but when the existing frame has become beaten-up, dinged and discoloured over the years, the lasting effect sours the hard work we put into making our homes beautiful. There is no doubt that the impact of a new coat of paint on an exterior—whether you’re painting your front door or updating said window trims—can significantly enhance a home’s curb appeal. Here’s our guide for how to do it right...
For this project, the barn-style home was repainted with a striking black exterior and charcoal grey window shutters, while the window trims were treated with the creamy white tones of 2686 Tuulikki. Pre-mixed with the semi-matt Valtti Opaque, it offers a highly durable finish for exterior timber surfaces and is suitable for both new and previously painted surfaces. If you're looking for a matt finish on your trims, we recommend using Ultra Matt. For a semi-gloss, translucent appearance try Unica Akva Lacquer.
No matter what shade you spring for, Tikkurila’s extensive colour range is suitable for exterior surfaces. Whether you choose to make subtle changes or are leaning towards more daring shades in the colour spectrum, consider selecting a harmonious palette for the building’s architecture. Think about how the style of the building and the surrounding landscape and plants will impact your exterior colours. Even if you’re swapping one white for another, you’d be surprised how much impact a repaint can make.
The Steps to Paint your Trim
1. FIRST STEPS
2. PRETREATMENT
For previously painted surfaces, remove loose paint and greyed wood from previously painted surfaces with a scraper and brush the surface with a steel brush.
3. PRIMING THE SURFACE
Before you begin painting, we recommend priming your wooden surface with Ultra Primer first and leaving it to thoroughly dry.
4. PAINTING THE WINDOW FRAMES
Stir Valtti Opaque well before use. Apply a coat of paint to the primed surface liberally and carefully on the end-grain and allow to dry.
