Frequently asked questions

How Do I Paint Kitchen Cupboards?

Painting kitchen cupboards can quickly (and cheaply) totally change the look of your kitchen.

First, you need to check your kitchen cabinets can be painted. If you have solid wood kitchen cabinets doors you are good to go, just make sure they are properly primed (more on that below).

If your kitchen cabinet doors are laminate or veneer, you have a trickier job on your hands. You can still paint them, but the shiny, smooth surface just means you have to sand and use an adhesion primer to encourage the paint to stick.

First, remove all knobs and handles (as well as the contents of your cupboards and drawers!) Use masking tape to protect hinges and glass and put down dust sheets to protect other parts of the room as necessary.

Next, wash your cabinets down with Tikkurila's Cleaning Agent or a strong detergent solution. This will remove grease and create a smooth canvas. Wipe off any residue with a damp cloth.

When the cabinets are dry, sand with fine paper (you can skip this step if you have melamine or high gloss surfaces). Fill imperfections with Helmi Furniture Filler which is great for filling in gaps on kitchen cabinets and cupboards as it's easy to sand, dries white, and it won't shrink or crack.

Apply a wood or melamine primer depending on the surface.

Priming Options

  1. Otex Akva     (for laminate or veneer)
  2. Helmi Primer     (for solid wood)

Once priming is complete apply two coats of your chosen colour. You might want to use a small roller on doors for a smooth finish. After the first coat is completely dry, sand with a fine paper to ensure a smooth, professional finish. Remember to wipe off any dust with a damp cloth.

Topcoat Options

  1. Everal Aqua 10, Everal Aqua 40 or Everal Aqua 80, depending on the sheen level required
  2. Helmi 10, Helmi 30 or Helmi 80, depending on the sheen level required
  3. Empire Furniture Paint

Are your Helmi topcoats self-undercoating?

With all our products, we do recommend using the full system including our primers. However, if you have pre-primed furniture, you can order a sample pot to ensure Helmi will adhere to the surface.

What's best for painting kitchen units, Helmi or Everal Aqua?

You can use either Helmi or Everal Aqua on kitchen cupboards, both are perfect for the job. Most of our customer base use Helmi as this product is designed for painting furniture and has excellent self levelling properties.

What is the maximum thinning rate for Helmi topcoats?

Depending on the application method we do not advise thinning Helmi furniture paints by more than 20%. To find thinning ratio relevant to your application method refer to the technical datasheet

Is Helmi a hybrid product?

No, the Helmi range is fully water-based

Is this product suitable for spraying with a gravity fed spray gun when thinned?

Yes! The Helmi paint range is suitable for brush, roller, and spray application. When it comes to spraying, Conventional Spray Machines, Airless Spray machines, and Air-Assisted Spray Machines are all suitable. Each machine type has its own nozzle tip size and thinning percentage recommendations. For these specific details, check out the Technical Data Sheet found in the Product Attachments section of the product page online (in this case, titled Helmi 30 TDS).

What Type Of Paint Can Be Used On Radiators?

For painting radiators, we recommended using Tikkurila’s Helmi 10 or Helmi 30. Unlike all modern-day solvent-based paints, they are guaranteed not to yellow upon exposure to heat. If you are applying paint directly to bare metal or painting over a radically different colour beneath, use Helmi Primer to build up coverage and maximise adhesion. This robust water-based primer is available in a wide range of colours with a drying time of just two hours.

The full range of topcoat options is noted below:

  1. Everal Aqua 10, Everal Aqua 40 or Everal Aqua 80, depending on the sheen level required
  2. Helmi 10, Helmi 30 or Helmi 80, depending on sheen level required
