Painted star on a kids bedroom wall

We began our project by painting a star shape chalkboard for an energetic statement wall. Painted with Liitu Blackboard Paint, this quickly applied paint can be tinted to any shade from our Symphony Colour Card, so there is no need to restrict yourself to a traditional black or green paint. The playful turquoise hue of VX370 Tiffany for this chalkboard complemented the contrasting bold lilac (X342 Hyacinth) of the surrounding walls for a joyous and exuberate bedroom for a little star in the making. The full-matt Joker interior paint is a luxurious mixture that adds a depth of richness to shades with a beautiful silk-like effect, boasting low VOC-emission level. Certified by the Allergy, Skin and Asthma Association (Helsinki), the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the EU Ecolabel and holds the M1 Emission Classification, the Joker range is one of the most eco-conscious paint for bedrooms in your home.

Bursts of colour are added by refreshing storage boxes in TVT 2076 and TVT 2075, using the Taika Pearl Paint collection. The quick-drying, waterborne Taika Pearl Paint reveals a glittering effect, transforming even the most ordinary objects. Lime greens were introduced for a bold contrast, while the jewellery stand was updated with the crisp white F497 Paper, using the semi-matt Helmi 30 furniture paint.

Looking to score extra brownie points with your kids? Go the extra mile by painting the outline of the star with the Taika Glow lacquer. Lasting up to six hours after the lights have gone out, this show-stopping paint will feel like you’re sleeping under the stars.

Putting the idea into practice

1. FIRST STEPS

Begin by wiping the surface of the wall clean. If the surface requires a deeper clean, use Tikkurila Maalipesu cleaning agent to remove unwanted dirt and leave to dry. Use a good quality filler like the Tikkurila Hole-in-1 to fill cracks, nail holes, blemishes, and levelling uneven surfaces. Finish by priming wall surfaces with Luja Universal Primer

Use a flexible masking tape and begin to shape the outline of the chalkboard. For a neat outline, use a small painting brush and paint onto the tape’s edge before filling in.

2. MARKING OUT THE STAR

Begin by measuring up 2-metres from where you want your star shape to be, and mark the top point. Using a spirit level, draw a straight 2-metre line down to get the centre of your star. Measure up this line 140cm, mark a point and use the spirit level to draw a horizontal line of 140cm and mark the tip of the star points 1-metre from the original vertical line. On your bottom line, measure out 70cm in each direction and mark out star point ends. Once this is completed, attach string in between the star point tips using masking tape to get your final shape. Draw the outlines of the star on the wall using a pencil and remove string once completed.

3. PAINTING

Apply a wide masking tape to the outer edges of the star’s pencil lines. Stir the Liitu Blackboard Paint, pre-mixed with your colour of choice, and begin to paint the outline first using a small paint roller. Fill in the rest of the chalkboard by applying two coats with a larger roller, allowing the paint to dry for 6 hours between each applied coat. Once the last coat has been applied, allow the surface to set for one week before drawing on with chalk. If you paint over the masking tape outlines, wipe the extra paint away with a wet cloth immediately.
