Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Optiva 3 and 5?

The main difference between the two is the sheen level.

Optiva 3 is a full flat matt (sheen level 3%)

Optiva 5 is a matt (sheen level 5%)

Both are designed for walls and ceilings and provide a class I scrub rating. We also have Optiva 7 and Optiva 20 available in the zero VOC Optiva range

Can I use any of your wall paints on my ceilings?

Yes...but we would always recommend using our Anti Reflex 2 paint for ceilings because it's a dead matt, non-flash paint making it great for areas of critical light. It's also very easy to touch up with strong hiding power.

The award-winning Anti Reflex 2 is a real favourite with our customers. Click here to check out the reviews

What does Class 1 scrub rating mean?

The scrub resistance evaluates the resistance of the coating to repeated cleaning and is measured by the following
method under the Class 1 ISO 11998 Test.

A predetermined wet film thickness of the paint is applied to the test substrate and allowed to dry for 28 days. The test panels are placed on the scrub testing machine and subjected to 200/40 scrub cycles (depending on paint type). After testing, the amount of paint that has been lost from the surface is calculated and expressed as a film thickness loss in micrometers. A Class 1 scrub rating indicates a loss of paint film of less than 5 microns after 200 scrubs.

Using a Class 1 rated product means the painted walls can be easily cleaned with warm, soapy water. More stubborn stains can also be tackled with standard household cleaner*, returning the surface to its original, premium matt finish.

* The instructions and directions for use of cleaning products should always be checked

Is this paint breathable? Ie suitable for lime plastered walls?

It is widely accepted that for a paint to be classed as breathable it should have an SD value of 1 or lower; the lower the value the more breathable the paint. Tikkurila’s testing is conducted in accordance with PN-EN ISO 7783:2002 and PN-EN 1062-1:2005 standards and can be found on individual product pages where applicable. If a breathable system is required the below product range would be recommended, and is suited to painting interior lime plaster for example

Can I use it on lime plaster

Recommend uses for Optiva 5 include the painting of gypsum boards, gypsum, cement-lime plasters, decorative painting of concrete substrates as well as renovation of old coatings.

Are Your Low Sheen Paints Scrubbable?

In general, flat and low sheen paints do not have a high amount of scrubability. However, Tikkurila’s durable range can protect your wall from those everyday marks and spills that can be easily wiped away (and are available in matt and flat matt finished) and is ideal for use in those busy areas of the home. What Are Zero VOC Paints?

While low VOC paint lines are widely available and used, they still contain the chemicals mentioned above and off-gas harmful fumes, though less than traditional paint products historically. The main differentiator for zero-VOC paint is that no VOC chemicals are added to their mixtures, resulting in a product that might only have trace amounts if any.
