Experience high-quality craftsmanship with Jim Sharples Furniture. Based in Bristol, this team are experts in designing, building and painting bespoke cabinetry. In this article, we're going to take you through the process of building a bespoke boot room, from priming and preparation to painting.

Preparation & Priming

Owner Jim designs each project to fit the desired space and specifications. With the custom design drawn up, it is time to cut each piece. This project uses a variety of materials, from natural wood to MDF.

To provide a flawless canvas for the paint, each piece was sanded and cleaned, ready for primer. As this project involves wood, Helmi Primer was the obvious choice for the base coat. This water-based, high-opacity acrylic primer will provide a perfectly smooth surface, free of pores, allowing the topcoat to adhere to the MDF firmly.

Utilising Tikkurila's Colour Matching Service, a custom shade of Helmi 10 was tinted for the client. As this will be a high-traffic area, a durable topcoat is vital. Helmi 10 is a washable and scrub-resistant paint that won't yellow. This paint was the ideal choice for the white shade selected for this project.
