Based in Birmingham, Garry Kness of Pro Murals applies his expertise and knowledge of decorative art to create breathtaking contemporary designs. With a mastery of traditional and modern techniques, Pro Murals has breathed life back into many spaces including historic buildings, schools, hospitals and, in this case, churches. Through this dedication to detail, Pro Murals transformed a plain stone alter into a breathtaking work of art.
Before and After

Preparation & Priming
Before painting the marble effect, the stone is meticulously prepared. Pro Murals began by sanding and cleaning the surface to get it ready for priming.
To prime, Gary opted for Hydrosol Masonry Primer. This water-based acrylate impregnation primer is the perfect base for this project as it will give something for the topcoat to cling onto. Typically used in exterior projects, this is a clever choice for a piece inside a high-humidity building like a church. Priming with Hydrosol will stabilise the stone before applying a topcoat.
Painting
With preparation complete, it is time for the topcoat. To achieve this incredible marble effect, Pro Murals opted to mix various shades of Valtti Opaque with a clear acrylic glaze. This technique, along with tools such as sponges, is what causes the dragging, swirling effects of marble.
