The tanks on site varied in age, with the oldest being 50. Since Carr's Billington Dumfries is a busy agricultural worksite, scaffolding and tarps were erected around the areas where the decorators worked to allow operations to continue without interruption. The Border Tanks team took extensive measures to steam clean and remove any dirt or rust to ensure quality results before handing over to Harkness Painting & Decorating Ltd to apply the high-quality, industrial-grade primer.
After preparing the surface, Temaprime EE was applied. This advanced solution by Tikkurila is engineered to deliver exceptional anti-corrosive properties, stabilising the metal substrate and safeguarding against future corrosion.
The original coating on these tanks had endured years of UV radiation and weathering, which was apparent visually. To avoid similar results, Carr's Billinton was keen to have a topcoat with excellent colour retention and a lasting, high-quality appearance.
Using brush and roller, the Harkness Decoratoring team applied Temalac ML 90, a high-gloss, alkyd topcoat colour-matched by Tikkurila to match Carr's Billington's signature navy blue. This solvent-borne coating will endure many years of exposure, retaining its striking finish and colour.
