Tikkurila specialist paints were selected as part of this maintenance project having been certified for use below ground by London Underground, passing various fire, safety and smoke test requirements.
Product Testing
Every project in the UK involving infrastructure must adhere to a comprehensive set of guidelines for fire testing procedures (classed under BS476). It's crucial to understand how materials will respond if a fire breaks out.
Each Tikkurila paint specified for LUL maintenance work was independently fire tested for smoke and smoke toxicity. Furthermore, based on BS476-compliant tests, they were all authorised for use below ground by London Underground.
Selected Tikkurila Paints
Almost all of the materials chosen for this project had to be suitable for use on previously painted surfaces in a worn state.
Tikkurila's Luja universal primer was picked for use on eggshell and gloss surfaces.
Luja topcoats in gloss grades 7–20 were elected for the walls and floors, as well as mineral surfaces and primed metal surfaces, especially in heavy traffic areas such as ticket hall tunnels.
Optiva primer and Optiva topcoat in gloss grades 5-20, were applied to the plaster surfaces in low-traffic areas as well as in offices, back rooms and shops.
Rostex Super Akva and Rostex Super Metal Primer were applied to metal surfaces that required priming.
Kiva 10 was applied to old wood panelling. Finally, Betolux was used to mark the floor lines in low-traffic zones, equipment spaces, and offices.
