Go Outdoors, a premier UK outdoor equipment retailer, identified its Clydebank superstore as a key location requiring an external refresh. The prominent retail unit, a significant draw for outdoor enthusiasts in the region, features extensive plastisol-coated metal cladding, which forms a major part of its visual identity and structural protection.

Over time, the building's exterior had begun to show the inevitable effects of weathering common in the Scottish climate. The original vibrancy of the plastisol cladding had diminished, leading to a faded and somewhat dated appearance that no longer fully aligned with Go Outdoors' dynamic brand image or the quality of the retail experience offered within.

To address this, a comprehensive refurbishment of the external cladding was initiated. The project aimed to not only restore and enhance the building's aesthetic appeal but also to ensure the long-term integrity and protection of the cladding system, thereby safeguarding the asset and reaffirming the store's status as a leading retail destination.

The Project

Go Outdoors initiated a full exterior refurbishment for its Clydebank superstore. The primary focus was the extensive plastisol-coated metal cladding system.

The core objectives were clearly defined: to significantly enhance the building's visual appeal with a fresh, modern look, ensure robust long-term protection for the cladding substrate against Scottish weather, and to strongly reinforce the Go Outdoors brand image. Durability and superior colour retention were key requirements for the chosen coating system.

A meticulous evaluation led to the selection of Tikkurila's advanced coating solutions for this task.

The chosen system centered on Tikkurila’s Panssari Akva, a specialist water-based acrylic paint renowned for excellent adhesion to plastisol and its lasting finish, potentially coupled with Rostex Super Akva primer for optimal surface preparation and longevity.

Preparation & Process

The project commenced with meticulous surface preparation of all plastisol cladding. This initial stage was critical for ensuring optimal coating adhesion.
All elevations were thoroughly pressure washed using Tikkurila Panssaripesu, a specialist cleaning agent, to remove accumulated dirt, grime, organic growth, and any chalking from the existing plastisol finish. Careful masking protected windows, doors, and unpainted surfaces prior to the coating application, ensuring clean lines.
A primer coat of Tikkurila Rostex Super Akva was then applied to guarantee excellent bonding.
Finally, two full coats of Tikkurila Panssari Akva were expertly spray-applied in the chosen corporate colours, achieving a uniform, highly durable, and aesthetically pleasing finish across the entire superstore facade, meeting all quality standards.
