Let’s start with the visuals. Exterior wood paints come in two varieties: semi-transparent (wood stains), or opaque (wood paints):

Wood Stains
Semi-transparent stains allow the beauty of the wood to shine through. They have a natural appearance and are designed to seal and protect the surface while offering an enhanced (and personalised) look. We have wood stains that can be used on garden sheds, fences, exterior wooden windows and doors, outdoor wooden furniture, and decking.

Wood Paints
Opaque finishes offer a solid colour appearance that partially conceals the grain of the wood and are available in an infinite number of colour options, allowing complete creative freedom. These products can be tinted to any Tikkurila Symphony shade (including the Feel the Colour Collection) and can also be colour matched - if you are looking for something specific. Our collection of opaque wood paints includes solutions for most exterior garden surfaces, such as fences, exterior doors and windows, sheds, and furniture. Decking - and exterior wooden flooring - are the only surfaces that do not have a suitable opaque paint (a wood stain finish would be recommended .
- Both options come in a range of colours. There are a few stains that can be purchased in a clear coating, but this is not generally recommended for every use case. Adding a tint to your exterior wood stain increases the coating's durability, resulting in a more long-lasting and protective finish.

We would recommend ordering one of the 250ml tins in Valtti Plus Color to sample your chosen stain shade. Otherwise, you can view all of our wood stain collections in their entirety online below.
Please keep in mind that colours shown on a digital screen or swatch card may not be representative of the final look when applied to your surface when it comes to exterior wood stains. The hue and opacity of wood will vary due to natural differences in its composition, such as type, colour, grain, texture, and wood porosity. Surface colour and texture can have an impact on the final finish colour and the number of coats required to achieve the desired colour.
