Choosing the Right Paint

Wooden Fences & Sheds

Not only does painting your garden fence or shed improve the look and style of your garden, but it also ensures that the wood is protected from adverse and extreme weather conditions that can lead to damage such as cracking and discolouration.

For this surface, we would recommend using Valtti Opaque. Developed to withstand extreme weather conditions, this water-based paint is easy to apply and forms a flexible, moisture resistant finish while allowing water vapour to permeate the wood.

Outdoor Wooden Furniture, Doors and Windows

The key to getting a smooth finish on these surface types is to take the time to properly prepare the surface. This process may include mould removal, removing any flaking, cracked, or peeling paint, filling in holes and cracks, and sanding down the surface, depending on the current condition.

For the best results - use a priming coat before your topcoat to ensure a smooth, long-lasting finish. we recommend Ultra Primer. (If you're dealing with a tricky surface or one that was previously painted to a gloss finish, you may need our Otex Adhesion Primer for better surface grip). Follow with either Ultra Matt or Ultra Classic for your topcoat - depending on the finish you prefer.

Test your Colour

Why bother with a tester pot when you've spent so much time collecting paint charts and browsing our colour collections online?

Shades on a computer screen rarely look the same as they do on a wall, and our paint charts are printed versions of the colour presented against a white background, which will alter your perception of the colour. This is especially important when painting wood. Because of the natural composition of the surface type, each piece of wood may react differently to the painting process.

That's why we recommend testing your favourite shades with our colour samples. Start with our complimentary colour cards which are available to order in 216 shades from the Feel the Colour Collection. After you've chosen your favourite(s!), move on to our wood paint sample pots. These are available in all 2000 colours from Tikkurila's collection, with the option of colour matching if you have a specific colour in mind.

Prefer a natural appearance?

Our exterior wood range also includes semi-transparent stains for timber surfaces such as windows and doors, garden furniture, and decking. Offering an enhanced and natural appearance while providing protection from the elements.
