In this article, we'll guide you through the process of a front door renovation of a 14th-century country estate in Bedfordshire, skillfully completed by Danegrove Decorators. Their dedication to detail resulted in a front door that's not only visually stunning but also built to withstand the test of time. Let's dive into the details!
Before and after
Preparation & Priming
Every successful front door renovation begins with rigorous preparation. Danegrove Decorators began by degreasing and sanding the door down to its bare wood. This essential step ensured that the surface was clean, smooth, and ready to absorb the new finish.
To prime the bare wood and provide a solid base for further treatments, the door was knotted and then undercoated with Otex Adhesion Primer.
The next step was to fill any imperfections on the door's face. A thin coat of fine surface filler was applied, creating a smooth and even surface. Once dry, it was sanded down with 120-grit sandpaper and once again it was filled and sanded with 240-grit sandpaper, ensuring a flawlessly smooth finish.
Finally, a second coat of Otex was applied, setting the stage for the final finish.
Painting
With the preparation complete, it was time to add the finishing touches. Danegrove Decorators opted for Miranol, an ultra-high gloss (over 80%) alkyd paint that offers durability and a stunning mirror-like finish. The painting process was an intricate one, involving several stages to achieve perfection.
After the first coat of gloss paint dried, which took 24 hours, the door was wet and dry sanded with 1000-grit sandpaper, ensuring a smooth and glossy surface. Then, it was glossed once again with Miranol, further enhancing its beauty.
A final round of wet and dry sanding with 1500-grit sandpaper brought out the door's luster, preparing it for the last step. The third and final coat of Miranol was applied, bringing the door's transformation to a glorious conclusion.
