A common question we get asked by our customers is can you paint UPVC windows and doors? The simple answer is yes. For many homeowners, a quick way of refreshing their home exterior is by adding a new paint colour for that extra curb appeal.
Prepare surfaces by ensuring they are clean and dry, free from anything that can interfere with the application or adhesion of materials and Tikkurila products to be applied, removing loose and failing material by scraping or brushing with a stiff bristle brush to a sound edge.
Feather the sound edges with a fine grade abrasive paper, removing all visible signs of organic growth and using Tikkurila Mould Removal Solution to treat areas before allowing them to dry
Use methylated spirit to ensure the surface is free from any contaminants and anything that could interfere with adhesion, frequently changing the cloth, before priming overall with one full coat of Otex Adhesion Primer.
Apply the primer in accordance with the technical data sheet and allow it to dry.
Finish with two full coats of Panssari Akva. Follow the minimum drying times (depending on conditions as per the technical data sheet) between coats.

Walnut is a straight-grained hardwood that ranges from chocolate brown (when it's from the center of the tree) to yellow (from the outer portion of the tree). A top pick for head-boards, ornate antique-style dining tables, and mantels, walnut is typically clear-coated or oiled to bring out its color.

Assess elevation aspect, take into account direct sunlight, colour choice, drying times.
Colour choice will have a direct effect on the thermal dynamic of the timber, Accoya although durable will still bleed resin and tannin, if a dark colour is applied to an elevation which is exposed to sunlight for long periods the heating of the surface will cause a resin migration which could result in blistering. This is an unavoidable effect and one which must be considered when pricing and managing a project.
- Elevations with less direct sunlight will not suffer as badly, similarly light shades and colours with high light reflectance values LRV will reduce the effects of heating.
- Ensure surface is clean and free from mould, dirt, grease and other forms of contamination.
- Treat nail heads with appropriate primer to avoid rust staining
- KNOTS: knotting compounds will help in the prevention of staining but will not prevent the excretion of resin
Wash/ brush down all surfaces as necessary, remove all mould and biological contamination using appropriate cleaning agent Tikkurila Mould Removal Solution or similar.
Apply one coat of Ultra Primer to all surfaces.
Allow minimum 2 hours before overcoating.

Larch is actually one of the hardest softwoods in the world. As a result of its punishing ‘upbringing’ in sub-zero Siberia, larch has plenty of hardness and natural durability.
Because of its remarkable natural physical properties and good looks, Siberian Larch is a go-to choice for a wide range of building projects, particularly outdoors. Some of the most popular commercial and household uses for this wood include cladding, decking and fencing
- As a softwood it is always advisable to degrease the surface with Tikkurila cleaning agent in order to remove any wood oils that may be present
- The surface to be painted must be dry, the temperature of air must be at least +5 °C and the relative humidity of air below 80 % during the application and drying.
- Remove dirt, mould and loose particles from the surface. Wash down dirty and mouldy surfaces with Tikkurila Mould Removal solution according to the instructions
Prime as early in the construction phase as possible. Protect rusting metal parts like nail heads with Rostex Super Akva metal primer. Remove loose resin from knots. Prime surfaces once with Ultra Primer. Finish with either Valtti Opaque 1-2 times (depending on sheen level required). Treat the end grains carefully.

When painting a garden building or summer house, consideration must be given to the colour being used and the prevalence of knots across the surface. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to prevent knots bleeding. Instead, it is advisable to take knots and resin bleeding into account before painting. Please see our recommended application steps below.
Process:
Wash down thoroughly, remove mould and algae growth with an appropriate cleaning agent like Tikkurila's Mould Removal Solution

Most commonly, tulipwood is the greenish yellowish wood yielded from the tulip tree, found on the Eastern side of North America and also in some parts of China.
The wood is very light, but very strong and is used in many applications, including furniture, joinery and skirtings. It can also be stained very easily and is often used as a low-cost alternative to walnut and cherry in furniture and doors.

Tricoya is an MDF panel that enables simple manufacturing and can be used in the most extreme environments. It is durable and stable enough for outside use.
Preparation
Sand the surface until it is smooth using your sanding block or a handheld oscillating tool with a sanding accessory. Start with 80-grit sandpaper on a rough surface to begin the process and move to the progressively finer grits of 120 and 220.
Wipe the surface clean with the dry rag to remove most of the dust created by sanding. Don't dampen the rag; the water will raise the grain and you'll have to sand again. Wipe it a second time with the tack cloth to remove the finer dust that remains.
Once the surfaces are prepared, it’s time to apply the first coat of primer.
Interior Priming Options
- Otex Akva
- Helmi Primer
- Akvi Primer (Fast drying option for spraying)
Interior Topcoat Options
Once dry, the surface can be painted with your preferred topcoat.
- Everal Aqua 10, Everal Aqua 40 or Everal Aqua 80, depending on the sheen level required
- Helmi 10, Helmi 30 or Helmi 80, depending on the sheen level required
- Empire Furniture Paint

Painting your render can give your masonry a bright, new look.
Cleaning & Preparation
Clean from all atmospheric, algae, mould contamination using Valtti Mould Removal Solution (1 part solution:4 parts water).
Scrub the surface with a stiff brush to remove any loose materials or dust. Start at the top of the wall and work your way down. Leave the surface to dry.
Priming
For flat surfaces, use a regular paintbrush. For craggy or highly textured limestone surfaces, use a paint roller. Take care to dab the primer/sealer into all crevices. Using a primer/sealer helps coats of paint stick to the surface and prevents moisture and water damage. You may need to apply two coats of primer/sealer. Wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second.
Topcoat Options
Paint the treated surface with our masonry paint, using either a regular paintbrush for flat surfaces or a medium-nap paint roller for textured and rough surfaces. You will need to apply more than one coat of masonry paint. Wait for the first coat to dry before applying the final coat.
Note: we always recommend conducting a test on a small area before painting lime chalk render
If you require more advice on painting over lime chalk render give our technical team a call on 0131 334 4999 or send a message to our technical team.
- Wash down with Tikkurila roof cleaning agent. Alloys generally have a covering of oil from manufacturing which needs to be removed. Even after exposure to the elements, the oils can persist. It is essential to remove these oils to ensure primers and topcoats adhere correctly
- All surfaces must be dry and roughened to form a ‘key’ prior to priming. The temperature of the ambient air, surface or paint should not fall below + 5 ºC during application or drying. The surface temperature should remain at least 3°C above the dew point
- If previously painted, remove any loose and flaking coatings and feather off any edges.
- Good ventilation and sufficient air movement is required in confined areas during application and drying
Apply basecoat of Rostex Super Akva or Temaprime EE
Suitable topcoats include Unica Akva, Unica Semi-Gloss Enamel or Panssari Akva.

• Asbestos is a carcinogenic silicate material commonly found in old insulation, fire-resistant boards, roofing sheets and ceiling tiles. If found it should be left untouched, appropriate authorities called and should only be disturbed, removed and disposed of by qualified licensed Asbestos removal experts. Asbestos is highly toxic if broken down into its fibrous state.
• Asbestos must not be sanded or abraded in any way which will cause the surface to break down.
• At most a light wash down may be completed with a soft brush and Tikkurila Cleaning agent, all washing residue should be collected in a sealed container and disposed of by a certified licensed asbestos removal company.
Priming Options

- While cedar can be painted, it is not recommended unless it is extremely weathered as it requires heavy preparation and is still prone to failure. It is a highly acidic oily hardwood and is so naturally durable it prevents proper adhesion of paint and wood stain products. In addition, if cedar is new and un-weathered resin bleeding will be an issue.
If there is still a requirement to paint, we recommend using a non-filming forming coating like Valtti Color
- Ensure the surface is degreased thoroughly first with Tikkurila cleaning agent. Ensure you use a white rag and keep degreasing until no residues are present on cloth
- Also ensure the surface is degreased with cellulose thinner to remove the surface oils.

Gutters and downpipes are a significant fixed feature on your house and are also one of the most difficult to paint.
To make matters worse, if you don’t do the job right, you will probably find that you need to re-paint your gutters and downpipes long before you have to paint your house again.
The two common things some people get wrong when painting gutters is choosing the wrong type of paint and not preparing the surface properly before painting.
The two most common materials gutters are made from are cast iron and UPC. Both of these require different preparation treatment and different types of paint.
Tips for Repainting
When you want to repaint your gutters, you will need to do some extra preparatory work:
• Scrape off all loose, flaking and peeling paint.
• Using a foam wet-dry sanding block, sand the sheen off of the remaining paint.
• Thoroughly wash the guttering. Soap it down with Tikkurila's Cleaning Agent using a sponge and then rinse completely. If possible, get up on a ladder and rinse from the top down. This way, you will be sure to remove all the debris and soap residue.
• When repainting gutters, give them a coat of primer first, as you do with new gutters.
Unless you’re repainting in the same colour, it’s best to remove the down pipes so you can repaint them thoroughly. It’s almost impossible to paint the backs of down pipes when they’re attached to the house.
Priming
- Rostex Super Metal Primer or Temaprime EE (cast iron)
- Otex Adhesion Primer (UPVC)
Topcoat
- Temalac FD20, Temalac FD50, Temalac FD80 or Panssarimaali (cast iron)
- Panssari Akva (UPVC)
When painting fencing consideration must be given to the colour being used and the prevalence of knots across the surface. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to prevent knots bleeding, it is advisable to take knots and resin bleeding into account before painting new fencing
