If you are concerned about the inside appearance, then an interior repaint would help - an interior repaint can instantly improve the appearance of a container without breaking the bank.
It is important to remember that the inside of shipping containers can be prone to condensation and a specialist topcoat is therefore recommended.
Before painting remove all rust, loose and flaking paint coatings back to a clean metal by grinding, scraping, steel brushing or sanding down.
Prime using Tikkurila's Temaprime EE
We recommend our Grafotherm for topcoating (two coats). GrafoTherm is a one-component water-based anti-condensation coating for steel roofing sheets, steel structures and other metal surfaces, where condensation and dripping-water problems occur. Suitable also for mineral walls and ceilings

Paint does not tend to adhere to silicone sealant. You can make paints cover by using an appropriate primer but it is not possible to guarantee long term results. It can depend on the type of silicone used and results can vary from case to case. For that reason, we recommend conducting a trial section first.
If you do wish to proceed our Otex Adhesion Primer will give the best results. It can then be topcoated with a product relevant to the substrate underneath.

Tikkurila provides an abundance of experience and knowledge when it comes to the painting of swimming pool walls and ceilings. Indoor swimming pools pose different problems to users all the time. High humidity is often a factor and the potential of attack from chlorine or salt from the water can also create problems. If the swimming pool enclosure is not properly ventilated then mould and algae can develop in certain areas of less ventilation, causing horrible visual ramifications, and ugly stains on the walls and ceiling.
High performance system for high humidity areas
- Prime with one coat of Luja Universal Primer
- Topcoat x 2 with Luja 7, Luja 20 or Luja 40, depending on sheen level required

Most ceramic wall tiles can be painted, as long as it's not frequently subjected to water or heavy wear. For instance, you can paint tiles on a bathroom wall, but avoid painting tiles that line a bathtub, shower, or that are on the floor or a countertop. It is essential that all primers and topcoats are allowed to CURE fully prior to washing or cleaning, please refer to individual product data sheets for curing times.
Wash tiles thoroughly with Tikkurila cleaning agent or any good quality readily available home cleaning material. Avoid cleaning agents that leave a residue or contain light aggregate. These leave a deposit and will cause a loss of adhesion.

Remove Soft Wax
Even if you're considering painting, you shouldn't do it over soft wax or furniture polish. To determine whether the wax is soft, try to scrape off a little with your fingernail -- if you're successful, the wax is too soft to paint and should be removed. Remove it with mineral spirits.
Painting Over Hard Wax
If the wax is hard enough to paint over, etch and scuff it before painting. Clean with Tikkurila's Cleaning Agent.
Prime with Otex Adhesion Primer

While cedar can be painted, it is not recommended unless it is extremely weathered as it requires heavy preparation and is still prone to failure. It is a highly acidic oily hardwood and is so naturally durable it prevents proper adhesion of paint and wood stain products. In addition, if cedar is new and un-weathered resin bleeding will be an issue.
If there is still a requirement to paint, we recommend using a non-filming forming coating like Valtti Color
- Ensure the surface is degreased thoroughly first with Tikkurila cleaning agent. Ensure you use a white rag and keep degreasing until no residues are present on cloth
- Also ensure the surface is degreased with cellulose thinner to remove the surface oils.
To maximise UV protection this product must be tinted, as a general rule darker the better.
Recommend uses for Optiva 5 include the painting of gypsum boards, gypsum, cement-lime plasters, decorative painting of concrete substrates as well as renovation of old coatings.
For small, humid bathroom spaces, we recommend our Luja hygiene range, which includes the Luja Universal Primer. Suitable for use on both new and old surfaces, and a variety of materials - including plaster walls. The Luja hygiene system prevents impregnation of moisture during repeated washing or constant high humidity.
Asphalt is a mixture of bitumen with crushed stone gravel or sand, used for paving, flooring, roofing
- Clean the surfaces from dirt, dust, moss and lichen. Use a high-pressure washer, avoiding damaging the substrate and structures. Use Valtti Mould removal solution, rinse carefully with clean water.
The surface to be painted must be dry. The temperature of the air, paint and surface, during application, should be at least +15°C and the relative humidity of the air below 80 %. The surface must not be more than 3°C colder than the air. Do not use the paint when rain is expected.

Mahogany is a durable yellowish-brown to reddish-brown usually moderately hard and heavy wood of a West Indian tree (Swietenia mahagoni) that is widely used for cabinetwork and fine finish work.
Painting mahogany wood can be a real challenge. When painting mahogany furniture in a light colour there will almost certainly be the matter of bleed through. You can prevent that if you take the proper precautions and use the right kind of products.
You may not think your substrate has grease and grime all over it but it's more than likely, it does. Make sure you thoroughly clean the wood with a grease remover (especially if it is a unit from the kitchen)! If you don't clean the mahogany properly then the paint may not stick properly and will flake away easily.

Make sure you thoroughly clean the wood with a grease remover (especially if it is a unit from the kitchen)! Pine is a durable wood that is often used to make furniture, panelling, and all sorts of other things. While pine isn’t tough to paint, it comes with a problem called colour bleeding. This is an issue especially with knotty pine since the knots leak more resin, leaving a stain. Stopping this resin can be very challenging. Blocking primers such as Multistop for interior wood or Pinja Flex Isolator for exterior can and do help, but heat sealing can provide a more effective solution:
- Scrape away excess resin.
- Heat knots with a heat gun and again scrape away excess resin.
- Once complete, wash down all oily surfaces with cellulose thinner, then rinse with clean water.
- Allow timber to settle
Once complete, prime with Ultra Primer.

Stained, faded and marked PVC surfaces make a property appear rundown, affecting the attractiveness of businesses to customers and of rental properties to prospective tenant. PVC surfaces on a property include Pipework, Guttering, Doors, Windows, Soffits and facia boards
The fact is that uPVC and cPVC (PVC from here on) are difficult to paint, but can be painted by following the steps below.
The PVC surface to be painted must be clean, dry and free from anything that will interfere with the adhesion and application of the materials and coatings to be applied.
Remove loose and failing material through scraping or brushing with a stiff bristle brush to a sound edge, feathering this with a fine grade abrasive paper.
Remove all visible signs of organic growth and using Tikkurila Mould Removal Solution to treat areas before allowing them to dry.
Use methylated spirit to ensure the surface is free from any contaminants and anything that could interfere with adhesion, frequently changing the cloth, before priming overall with one full coat of Otex Adhesion Primer.
Apply the primer in accordance with the technical data sheet and allow to dry.
Finish with two full coats of Panssari Akva. Follow the minimum drying times (depending on conditions as per the technical data sheet) between coats.
Please note there are additional options available in our industrial range (for professional use only). Our range of two pack polyurethanes include two primer-finish products (Temadur 10 and 20).

Idigbo Timber is a yellow-brown hardwood that is often used for joinery, windows or doors, and interior fittings. Both light and relatively durable, this wood is often used as a less expensive alternative to oak.
- Idigbo contains highly water-soluble extractives which exhibit themselves as a yellow/green staining on light coloured paint finishes.
- Dark tannins will leach out of the timber onto surrounding substrates such as masonry if the timber is not properly coated.
- Specialist stain inhibiting primers are required when painting this species.
- Coarse grain structure can cause trapped air in drying paint films leading to bubbles
